Rob Gordon's Top Five Favorite Movies To Be Thankful For

The Nicole Edition

1. THE FAMILY STONE
Okay, so there are parts of this movie that are absolutely painful to watch. The family treats SJP's character like a pariah even though they aren't all that great themselves. Still - every scene involving Luke Wilson makes this a really great feel good movie.

"You scooped me up with a big red shovel. You scooped me up."

2. MARY POPPINS
Whenever I'm feeling particularly down, I pop in Mary Poppins. There's just something about Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke that perks me up.

"No, and that was nothing like a good joke."

3. ELF
So sweet and innocent, I can watch this any time of year for a good laugh or cry. What in the world would make me cry in a movie like Elf, you ask? Every single time Walter Hobbs (James Caan) joins in the Christmas singing at the end of the movie, it gets me. Every. Single. Time.

"I'm a human, raised by humans."

4. BIG FISH
Can anyone really resist feeling uplifted when they hear Will Bloom (Billy Crudup) recount the tale of how his father, Edward Bloom (Albert Finney) turns into what he always was, A Very Big Fish?

"I don't think I'll ever dry out."

5. THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS
Again with the Luke Wilson. I just love him to pieces and wish he'd stop doing those freaking AT&T commercials and stop being such a diva about sucking so much lately. Anyway, this is the only movie that can make me feel utterly depressed and freakishly uplifted at the same time. The scene when Richie (Luke!) cuts his wrists is so tragic it's beautiful. And that slow-mo ending always leaves me feeling oh-so-good.

"I always wanted to be a Tenenbaum."

Agreed. If I'm watching this movie with someone that isn't you and we get to that part I'm like...shit shit, I'm going to cry...like burst out cry..shit how do I hide this?!

  2. Re: Elf - I feel the same way! Love love love that movie and one that didn't make me disappointed in Will Ferrell... I also cry at the end when James Caan starts singing and Santa's sleigh whooshes by! It was on the other day and I started tearing. I was so glad Phil was upstairs because he would have ripped me apart for that.
